| Vera May, My work acknowledges the traces
of memory left behind, allowing visual narrative to develop and transform.
The work contains fantasy without sentiment within the paintings play of
natural forms. It is layered meticulously, maintaining materiality and flatness
on a ground of batik print, that creates a symbiosis that together form
a celebration of a peripatetic lifestyle. This sense of harmonious structure
relies on the process which comes together on the surface of the painting.
It incorporates the decorative, and yet recreates an enchanted world that
the viewer is enveloped in. A world of botanical references interspersed
with mythological and quasi-religious belief. This seeps its way into our
contemporary surroundings and it is the fusion between these two aspects
which I am exploring. Leslie Adams was born in Singapore. She is of Australian
heritage and has been a British resident since 1975. EDUCATION |
